How to Count Words Accurately (and Why Tools Disagree)

June 2, 2026

If you've ever pasted the same paragraph into two different word counters and gotten two different numbers, you're not imagining things. Word counting sounds simple, but tools disagree on edge cases like hyphenated words, numbers, and standalone punctuation.

Most counters split text on whitespace, which means "well-being" counts as one word in some tools and two in others depending on how hyphens are treated. Em dashes, ellipses, and bullet markers can also throw off a naive counter.

What MaxoTools' Word Counter does

Our Word Counter splits on whitespace and strips punctuation-only tokens, which matches how Microsoft Word and Google Docs count in the vast majority of everyday text. For strict SEO or academic word limits, always check the specific platform's own counter as the source of truth.
